Summertime is in full swing. Some foods—even though they are great year-round—just simply seem to go well with summertime. For example, a round of margaritas and some great Mexican food are fantastic on summer evenings. You may not realize it, but tomatillos are a key ingredient to many of your favorite Mexican dishes.

Tomatillos are small round fruits that resemble little tomatoes, with the addition of an inedible husk. A member of the nightshade family, tomatillos are related to tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and potatoes. From a nutrition standpoint, tomatillos are low in calories and rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, niacin, potassium, manganese, and healthy omega 6 fatty acids.

Tomatillos originated in Mexico, but have spread to be grown in other regions as well, including Texas and other Central American countries. They are the key ingredient in fresh and cooked Mexican spicy green salsa or “salsa verde.” Salsa verde can range in spiciness from mild to mouth-searing. It may be served cold as a condiment or warm, as in a chile verde. In authentic Mexican cuisine, salsa verde is very often used as a dip for tortilla chips or served with tacos and grilled pork.

Silva now offers dried tomatillo in flakes, granules, and powder. If you are interested in this unique flavor for your formula or application, your Silva sales contact can get you more information along with product samples.
