A History of Excellence

1970

Silva USA was established as a marketing arm for the Silva European Group of companies.

1979

Silva International becomes a separate U.S. company, being incorporated in the state of Illinois.

1985

A global sourcing program is established as a cooperative with Silva International and our affiliates in Europe.

1992

A refocus of Silva International was conducted with a new business plan to build up our U.S. operation in Illinois, better servicing our customers within North America.

1994

Silva International opens our first processing facility in Momence, Illinois.

2001

A new warehouse and distribution center is completed, also in Momence.

2003

Silva opens a joint venture farming and dehydration facility in Qingdao Haiwang, China.

2005

An expansion to our warehouse/distribution center was created, building three additional, high-capacity production lines. Silva now is running with 12 processing lines at our facilities in Momence to enhance our capacity and add the latest in quality control technology.

2007

A Quality Control office is established Qingdao City, China to effectively administer our quality control programs, monitoring our raw material, and field management.

2009

Steam sterilization capabilities are added as a part of our production facility.

2010

Expansion of our existing warehouse and distribution building, doubling the size of the building to meet current demands.

2014

Three new multi-story production lines are added for additional capacity and efficiency.

2016

Four more production lines are built, which includes more capacity for inspection and sorting—along with production of flakes, granules, and powders.

2018

We continue to grow for our customers. A 180,000 sq ft warehouse building is constructed next to our existing building on Mechanic Street in Illinois. Both buildings will be connected and the new building also includes zero-ox fumigation capability.

2020

An acquisition is completed for Silva to become a part of Universal Global Ventures, a plant-based ingredient platform and group of companies. This exciting acquisition uniquely aligns Silva for continued growth opportunities, as a company and for our customers. A business move that allows for continued future strategic planning within our global organization.

2021

Silva completes another production expansion at our Illinois facility. This new addition includes an infrared treatment process line for our ingredients, utilizing another all-natural treatment technology that will be a complement to our existing steam sterilization process. Also within this new facility expansion are additional cleaning and cutting production lines, adding more capacity for our customers, and future growth plans.

A Global Procurement Strategy

Universal Corporation—the leading global leaf tobacco supplier with a more than 100-year agricultural-based history—is committed to upholding Silva’s culture and mission, while providing opportunities for collaboration and growth. As part of the acquisition, Silva is able to leverage the resources and scale that Universal offers as a company with a global presence. Additionally, the Universal Global Ventures platform, of which Silva is a part, creates more opportunities and development around plant-based ingredients.
